"That's because you're a good, law-abiding citizen. But many people aren't. Which I guess is sometimes a good thing, otherwise they wouldn't need people like me as much," I say with a shake of my head. You know, some people think it's terrible that there are lawyers like us who help people find loopholes around laws — even though that is only one small part of all the kinds of jobs I accept. But the way I see it, there are always going to be people who try to bend the rules or find some way to take advantage of the system. There's no way around it. At least when you have people pushing the limits of the law, you can actually discover what laws need to be fixed and revised.
And predictability of laws is important. You can't just lock people up for breaking the spirit of the law, then the laws all become subjective and pointless.
I pinch my nose and sigh.
"Okay, well... I probably shouldn't stay home for too long, I don't think they'll like 'worrying about the magical hole in the cemetery' as an excuse to stay out," I say, even though really, I call the shots around the office. Magnus and I both know this. I could take off if I wanted, but right now, I think I'm the most useful back in the office, now that I have made sure my husband knows of all this craziness. "But let me know as soon as Alec gets back to you, and I'll do the same with Melissa. Maybe we can talk more about it tonight?"
